CONSERVATION

There are a number of conservation projects underway on Atauro along with a number of supporting conservation organizations undertaking these projects or supporting locally led conservation initiatives.

1. World Fish.

WorldFish have been helping local communities across Atauro Island. They have been working to develop sustainable livelyhoods with communities through the deployment of Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD's) and have now successfully deployed two FAD's on Atauro, one at Adara on the west coast and one in Beloi on the east coast. Along with this they have supported the Adara community with the development of a Tara Bandu (Locally Managed Marine protected Area - LMMA).

2. Blue Ventures Conservation.

Blue Ventures Conservation are an Eco-Tourism / Marine Conservation organisation working in Beloi. They have supported the Beloi community to develop local homestay accommodation and creating awareness for local communities on marine conservation. They have also trained local community members to perform seagrass surveys.

3. Conservation International.

Conservation International have been working on Atauro for the protection of both marine and terrestrial environments. They are working with local communities to develop more marine protected areas around the island. In 2016 Conservation Internation reported Atauro Island as the most bio-diverse place on the planet for reef fish, please see here for a link to their report.
