The bottom topography around Atauro Island is made up of fringing reef slopes through to deep sheer walls close to the coastline. Some of these wall descend more than 100m. The offshore waters surrounding Atauro reach depth of over 3000 meters. this combination  sees some interesting fishing around Atauro. From reef fishing on the drop offs and pinnacles for the usual species for snapper and reef fish to trolling along the deep walls for the larger pelagic species for Tuna, Mackerel, Barracuda, Sailfish and the illusive Marlin.
